Sept 10 - Tryout 3 Review

Good job today.

Notes:
  • There will be a team fee that you must pay at the Athletic Centre (may be done online potentially). Details to come.

Review:

  • Warm-up
  • Lotto: 8 minute limit today, with everyone finishing on time. I saw a lot of pushups being done for turnovers. Let's fix this.
  • Flying V: Several points... a) make cuts sharp as you hit the cone -> don't loop around it. b) work on your timing. try to be planting and reversing your direction just as (or a split second after) the other guy is catching the disc. This way you will be in stride just as the disc goes up (making eye contact with the thrower) and will receive the disc early in your cut. c) try to throw so that your receiver catches it at chest level, arms extended in front of them. d) Kirk made a good point about PRESSURE TO PERFORM. If you're phased by the pressure to perform, try setting goals for yourself in other circumstances, getting yourself used to setting and achieving those goals. If you set a goal, make sure do it. Norm can tell you all about making neural pathways and how giving up on your goals is bad.
  • Scrimmage: Things were looking good. Just to reiterate, think about spacing (spread the Ho stack, cutters should respect handler's space by not coming too close, handlers should spread the field too), make your cuts hard (you don't have to be cutting all the time, but when you do, make it hard and decisive), clear space (always be aware of the cutters around you and where they're going), and CUT IN FAST AFTER YOU GO DEEP.

Sept 9 - Tryout 2 Review

Logistics:

  • Get your UPA membership up to date and get you number on the BBS ASAP.
  • If you can't make any practice, post on the Missed Practice thread on the BBS
  • If you can't make a tournament, or have questions please let me know: taylor.g.martin@gmail.com
  • Party this weekend at Steve and Lowell's house, details to come.

Tournament dates:
Sept 20 - UPA Sectionals, Rochester NY
Sept 27/28 - CEUUC (Easterns), Montreal
Oct 3-5 - CUUC (Nationals), Edmonton

Review:

  • Warm-up
  • Lotto: Read yesterday's post. 3-man: Marks need to be more active. Fakes need to be more decisive -> no stutter faking. Corale the disc as you run to set up the mark in 3-man. Berkeley: cuts need to come from further out. Make 2 cuts maximum (one up line, one back the way you came).
  • Throw for Score: Read the details from yesterday's review. Throw throw throw!
  • Scrimmage: 4-4 tie. Good comeback from White. Both teams had trouble in the endzone. Reset the disc instead of forcing it up the line. Don't crowd your handlers.

Sept 8 - Tryout 1 Review

A nice morning for the first tryout of the year. A few logistical points first:

  • Make sure you're on the BBS (check it daily)
  • Practices run Mon-Fri, 7:30am, until early October

Tournament dates:

  • Sept 20 - UPA Sectionals, Rochester NY
  • Sept 27/28 - CEUUC (Easterns), Montreal
  • Oct 3-5 - CUUC (Nationals), Edmonton

If you hope to play for the A team at Nats you will need to attend Sectionals and Easterns. Some exceptions may apply, so please let us know NOW what your availability is.

Review:

  • Warm-up
  • Lotto: 10 minutes to complete 5 throws each in two drills. 3-man focuses on hard, active marking. Get a low stance and move your feet to reposition yourself to stop the throw. Use your positioning to dictate where the disc goes, rather than the other way around. As a thrower, make sure you are faking to throw off the mark, and make your fakes legitimate threats. In the Berkeley drill, make 2 decisive cuts, no more! Start with a sharp cut up the line (~45 degrees), then turn hard and return the way you came, while curling towards the middle of the field. No stutter cutting.
  • Throw for Score: Deep cuts should go straight out, rather than towards the sideline. Throws should come out early and be put to open space so that the cutter can run onto them (no hospital passes/jump balls). Eye contact is key. Flicks were weak and everyone should be working to improve them. Start by flattening out the disc and getting more spin.
  • Scrimmage: White wins by a large margin. Points were made about spreading the Ho stack fully across the field, keeping the Ho stack close to the cutters, and cutting in hard after going deep. 75% of the cuts you make will never get you the disc, but they will create open space for someone else to cut into. Start your cuts early!

Homework:

  • Get out and throw every day. Practice off the line throws (slower, hanging passes over 10-20 ft) as well as bombs.
